In the last ten years, distance education has gained prominence in the social context of education in Brazil, mainly due to the significant increase in the total number of higher education students enrolled in this modality. The role of the media and the contemporary characteristics of society can expose substantial factors for the formation of a culture focused on consumption, interfering in the ways of thinking, acting and consuming of individuals, including in the field of Education. For this purpose, a bibliographic search was carried out through written and electronic means. Between the months of April and June 2020, in the electronic searches, the Google Scholar, traditional Google, Scielo and Lilacs databases were accessed, indicated in the methodology of this study. In view of this theme, the present study aimed to characterize subsidies related to the following question: what is the role of the media and the characteristics of the current (postmodern) society in the changes of Brazilian higher education education in the face of a culture mediated by consumption? The realization of this showed that the influence of the media, and the current social characteristics, is decisive in the relationship of individuals with consumption, including in the scope of education. Through consumption, the subject seeks his personalization.
