Objective: To highlight through an integrative review of the literature the risk factors associated with breast cancer as well as methods of prevention. Methodology: The study consists of an integrative review of literature of a descriptive character, having as main theme the analysis of risk factors for breast cancer. The research was conducted from August to December 2020 and for the collection of the articles were used the bases of: Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO), Periodical Portal of CAPES and PubMeD. Articles published from 2014 to 2020 were used as inclusion criteria, with full texts, articles with free online version, productions in Portuguese, Spanish and English. 19 articles were selected to compose the integrative literature review. Results: The main factors for the appearance of breast cancer are obesity, which has a close relationship with breast cancer. This is because being overweight is considered a risk factor for developing the disease. Smoking influences the risk of breast cancer and is related to approximately 50 diseases. What is currently done, besides the self-examination is a monographic screening, which is nothing more than a mammography at regular intervals. Conclusion: Studies on breast cancer risk factors should be stimulated, as well as breast cancer prevention methods.
