The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly specialized mobile joint, considered one of the most complex and used in the human body. Surgery for temporomandibular joint disorders may include mandibular manipulation assisted with increased hydrostatic pressure, astrocentesis, arthroscopy, arthrotomy, eminoplasty, and eminectomy. The aim of this study is to carry out a literature review on the different surgical techniques in temporomandibular joint disorders and their indications, in order to guide the dentist to further clarification and, consequently, to a better approach. Data were collected through databases such as: PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and academic google, from February to April 2021. The keywords were used: temporomandibular joint, temporomandibular joint anatomy, disorders of the temporomandibular joint, temporomandibular joint pathology, temporomandibular joint disorders, TMD treatment, TMD surgery. Thus, the study is very relevant because without an intervention, TMJ disorders can worsen and a correct diagnosis is essential for the correct surgical approach to be applied.
