Spirituality and religiosity in treating patients with acute myocardial infarction: integrative review

Objective: Identify the contributions of spirituality and religiosity in the treatment of patients with myocardial infarction. Method: Integrative review of articles published between 2007 and 2020 in the PUBMED, LILACS, SCIELO, SCOPUS, CINAHL databases, Portal BVS and Portal Periódicos CAPES, using the descriptors: myocardial infarction, religion, spirituality and patient-centered care, in portuguese, english and spanish. The interpretation was based on Souza et al. (2010) and the categorization method for analysis. Results: After studies’ analisys, four found articles reported the contribution of spirituality and religiosity in care of acute myocardial infarction’ patients. There is evidences that the patients showed improvements in their spiritual, physical and psychological condition with benefits in their recovery, positive help in coping with health problems and reduction of risks after the event. Final considerations: Spirituality and religiosity have a positive influence, such as benefits, or neutral in the treatment of patients with AMI. No negative effects are evidenced.
