Objective: Exclusive breastfeeding (EB) is the best nutritional alternative to maintaining the health of the newborn, due to the presence of bioactive factors in breast milk and “metabolic imprinting”. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the benefits of EBF in preventing overweight in infants in the first semester of life, highlighting the risks of childhood obesity. Methodology: An ecological, descriptive and epidemiological study was carried out on the prevalence of EBF in children under 6 months of age in the five Brazilian regions between 2015 and 2019, through data recorded in the Food and Nutritional Surveillance System (SISVAN), presented in tables and graphs. Results: The prevalence of exclusive maternal nutrition in children under 6 months of age registered lower rates in milk during the period evaluated and a reduction in values was observed in the analysis, with the greatest decrease in the North. However, this region remained with the best rates attributed in 2019. It was also noted that breastfeeding has an important protective and reducing effect on child morbidity and mortality, such as reducing child diarrhea by 25 times. It was observed that EBF caused an increase in mean SBP by 1.39 mmHg, DBP by 0.79 mmHg and triglycerides when compared to children who had been adequately breastfed. Furthermore, obesity was reduced in 22% of infants who received EBF, preventing possible vascular diseases, as well as subsequent embolisms and thrombosis. Conclusion: It is observed the importance of stimulating this nutritional form until the sixth through public and private health policies.
