Clinical-epidemiological profile of patients with fractures in the hand bones, treated at a referral hospital in the western Amazon

Abstract

The hands are an important organ of perception and performance, consisting of 27 bones each. Fractures in these bones are common and lead to important functional and economic consequences, so proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for a correct recovery. The objective of this study is to know the clinical-epidemiological profile of patients treated at the emergency department of a referral hospital and emergency room in Rondônia. The medical records of patients treated between January and March 2021 were analyzed, then the data from the medical records of those patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were tabulated in an Excel spreadsheet. Thus, 50 patients were included in the study. The mean age was 36.89 years (13-92), males were the most affected, 90% (45/50), most patients (43) had only one fracture and fractures occurred predominantly on the right side, 54.38% (31/57). Among all 50 patients, there were no deaths. In only 34% (17/50) of the cases, the trauma mechanism was described, with automobile accidents, 35.29%, and work accidents, 23.52%, the most prevalent. It can be seen that the prevalence of hand fractures occurred in males with a mean age of 36.89 years, which is similar to other studies compared here, both when analyzing gender and the increase from the third decade onwards. In addition, the majority had only one fracture and the most common trauma mechanism was a car accident.
