Pharmacoepidemiology, impacts of anxiety disorders and anxiolytic abuse before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Anxiety Disorders (AD) have gained prominence in recent years due to the increasing number of patients with this diagnosis worldwide. EDs have a higher incidence in older patients, being more prevalent in women. Studies correlate this increase with exacerbated external and internal pressures, rhythm, and lifestyle. The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed significantly to this increase. In this sense, to alleviate anxious episodes, improve sleep quality, or increase productive performance, the demand for anxiolytics has increased considerably worldwide, including Brazil. Anxiolytics act on the Central Nervous System (CNS), however, the abusive use of these psychoactive substances can cause neurological damage. Knowing this, the present work aims to analyze scientific publications to identify the main impacts of anxiety and the evolution of anxiolytic abuse before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as pharmacoepidemiologic aspects of medicines against ED through a review narrative, descriptive and retrospective literature. For this, a non-exhaustive bibliographic review was carried out based on the review of scientific articles and data published between the period 2011 and 2021. Statistical analyzes were carried out according to the nature of the variables, using the appropriate tests to differentiate the groups independent in studies. Our results express an increasing number of ED diagnoses during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the irrational and abusive use of anxiolytics in Brazil.

Author Biographies

Yuri Nascimento Fróes, Instituto Florence de Ensino Superior

Degree in Pharmacy-Biochemistry (CEUMA University, 2018), Master's in Microbial Biology (CEUMA University, 2021) and Specialization in Hematology and Blood Bank (Monte Pascoal Institute, 2021). He has professional experience in Commercial and Hospital Pharmacy (ONA Level 3). He is currently a professor at Faculdade Florence in the Department of Pharmacy, Aesthetics and Biomedicine. He has taught the subjects of General Pharmacology, Hospital Pharmacy, Basic Immunology, Clinical Immunology, General Hematology, Pathology, Clinical Cytology, Anatomophysiology, Epidemiology and Mechanisms of Aggression and Defense. As a teacher, he has skills in the teaching and learning process in hybrid systems and active methodologies. It promotes, participates and supports academic extension projects. He is a member of the Structuring Teaching Nucleus (NDE) of the Pharmacy and Biomedicine Course. President of the Academic League of Tropical Diseases (LADT). He is a member of the Pharmaceutical Assistance technical group in Primary Care (CRF/MA). Line of research: Epidemiology of Neglected Tropical Diseases and Bioactive Products. During the master's degree, he worked on the following topics: ethnopharmacology and in vitro bioprospecting to obtain natural products with leishmanicidal activity. He has technical skills in methodologies for evaluating the cytotoxicity of natural products and/or isolated, alternative models of toxicity in vivo, using larvae of Tenebrio molitor and in vitro assays of leishmanicidal action. Has basic to intermediate skill in statistical analysis using GraphPad Prism 8.

Mizael Calácio Araújo, Universidade CEUMA

Farmacêutico Generalista formado pela Universidade CEUMA. Pós Graduando em Biologia Molecular Aplicada ao Diagnóstico (Uniceuma). Pós Graduando em Farmácia Clínica hospitalar (FAVENI). Doutorando em Biodiversidade e Biotecnologia da Amazônia Legal (BIONORTE, UFAM), Regional Maranhão (Universidade Ceuma/UFMA). É membro Aspirante da Sociedade Brasileira de Farmacologia e Terapêutica Experimental (SBFTE, 2018). Foi aluno Bolsista de Iniciação Ciêntiifica Pela Corordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES). Atualmente faz parte do grupo de pesquisa da Universidade Ceuma, atuando na área de Imunofarmacologia e Biologia Parasitária; também trabalha com o estudo da síndrome metabólica e suas comorbidades.

Saulo José Figueiredo Mendes, Universidade CEUMA

Possui graduação em Farmácia pela Faculdade Pitágoras (2012). Foi aluno de iniciação científica (voluntário) desenvolvendo projetos com produtos naturais em modelos de inflamação (2010-2012). Possui mestrado em Biologia Parasitária (bolsista FAPEMA) pela Universidade Ceuma, com ênfase em farmacologia (2013-2015). Possui Doutorado em Biotecnologia (bolsista CAPES) pela rede de Biodiversidade e Biotecnologia da Amazônia legal, PPG-BIONORTE (2016-2018). É docente e membro do Núcleo Docente Estruturante (NDE) e colegiado do curso de farmácia da Universidade CEUMA (UniCEUMA, São Luís, Maranhão), onde leciona(ou) disciplinas na área de Farmacologia, Patologia, Farmacognosia, Química Farmacêutica. É docente do Instituto de Ensino Superior Franciscano (IESF), onde leciona as disciplinas de Farmacologia, Microbiologia, Imunologia e Bioquímica. Tem experiência de pesquisa nas áreas de Farmacologia da Dor e Inflamação, Imunologia Celular e Molecular, Microbiologia, Bioinformática e Produtos Naturais.
