Consequences of food selectivity in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: bibliographic review

Abstract

This literature review aims to analyze and highlight studies that show the consequences of food selectivity in autistic children. Studies in English and Portuguese from PubMed and Scielo databases were used. And the keywords for the search were: Nutritional Therapy; Food Selectivity; Infantile Autism. After screening the selected articles, 38 full-text articles remained, including 22 articles, which were read for the food selectivity of autistic children. Nutritional therapy reduces the selectivity of children with autism spectrum disorder, but clinical studies in this area are still scarce and, therefore, there is no defined therapeutic diet. The child with selective autism spectrum disorder may suffer in the future with the deleterious effects of this eating condition.
