The Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder, its characteristics may impact functional skills. The instrument “Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory'' (PEDI) does mensureant the functional independence degree in the mobility area, self-care and social function. Therefore, this study aims to describe the functional performance level of DS children, according to PEDI. It is a descriptive research, with quantitative approach, it was made in the Associação de Pais e Amigos Excepcionais (APAE) in a city of Bahia southwest. Ten caregivers of SD children participated in the survey, with both genders, with ages between 2 to 6 years old and 11 months old that were registered in the health services of APAE. It was used to data collection a sociodemographic information questionnaire built by the researches of the study and the PEDI, it was done through interviews with the same caregivers. As a result, it was observed that 63,3% of the children presented an score under the expected to their ages, in the functional skills area and 66,6% of them presented a lower score in the part of the caregiver support, pointing out that there is a delay in the acquisition of functional capacity of these ones. It is necessary the knowledge of these data by the early intervention professionals that assist these individuals, about the stimulus of functionals skills, such as the guideline and the incentive to the caregivers about the continued stimulus in the household environment giving them the opportunity to realize their actions with independence or minimum assistance.
