Risk factors for oral cancer

The risk factors for the development of oral cancer have been much questioned nowadays, due to the great increase in its prevalence among the population. There are several types of risk factors, such as smoking, alcoholism, HPV infection, unprotected sun exposure, diet and poor oral hygiene. One of the etiological factors that has been shown to have a greater predisposition to malignant lesion is smoking and alcoholism, especially with the simultaneous association (synergism). The dental surgeon plays a fundamental role in the prevention and diagnosis of oral cancer, in addition to making the patient aware of their habits and health care, especially people who have etiological factors. This work aims to bring information about the main risk factors that act in the development of malignant lesion in the oral cavity, which can serve as an informational base on this topic for dental students as well as professionals in the area. A descriptive narrative literature review was carried out, using as a bibliographic basis scientific articles published between the years 2011 to 2022, available in online databases such as PubMed, Scielo, Google Scholar, INCA, and the articles are in Portuguese and English.
