Abstract

The administration of local anesthesia in patients with phobia of needle anesthesia can result in anxious reactions, with reports of allergic reactions, leading the professional to choose less effective local anesthesia preparations in subsequent treatment sessions, or resulting in the patient undergoing costly and unproductive treatments. The patient's fear of conventional local anesthesia can result in the inadequate use of anesthesia by the dental surgeon, making treatment even more difficult for patients who are phobic about anesthesia. Thinking about the fear of needled syringes and the sensation of anesthetic injection in many patients, dentistry has been searching for more comfort, with the use of topical anesthetics, nitrous oxide, as well as devices that inject computerized anesthesia and needleless injection system. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the needleless injection method and the perception of patients regarding its use. As methodology, objective questionnaires were used containing questions such as: fear of the needle, pain intensity, preference for the needleless method, and others, to evaluate the patients' impressions and fields to be filled out by the professional applicator. Based on the results obtained in this study, it was found that 83.33% of the patients who reported fear of the needle preferred the use of the Comfort-in oral anesthetic system, rather than conventional needle anesthesia. We conclude that the use of the Comfort-in in patients who are afraid of needles was more effective, in this study, when compared to the conventional method.
