Mesiodens: Etiología, características clínicas y manejo terapéutico. Revisión bibliográfica

Resumen

Las anomalías dentales de número, como los mesiodens, son cada vez más detectadas, y representan una subcategoría de anomalías supernumerarias, que es predominante en hombres en la dentición permanente. Su etiología es desconocida aun, sin embargo, existe una variedad de complicaciones que afectan a las estructuras dentarias de la dentición común. La forma más eficaz y optima de diagnosticarlo es a través de imágenes, la tomografía computarizada de haz cónico (CBCT) es la más adecuada para conocer ubicación y forma; por lo tanto, es la herramienta que hoy en día complementa a la planificación quirúrgica de la misma, asegurando un pronóstico favorable. El objetivo de este estudio es recopilar información importante y actualizada acerca de las principales generalidades y aspectos de los mesiodens a través de la revisión bibliográfica. Para el desarrollo de este estudio, se revisó literatura de diferentes fuentes científicas relacionadas a mesiodens. De un total de 1533 artículos científicos solo 36 fueron seleccionados gracias a los criterios de inclusión establecidos. En conclusión, la teoría más aceptada por múltiples estudios acerca del origen de los mesiodens, es la de la hiperactividad de la lámina dental, entre otros factores genéticos. Su diagnóstico puede ser realizado a través de un examen clínico, sin embargo, un CBCT puede permitir hacer una detección más explícita y visualizar así posibles complicaciones a futuro. Además, es una buena herramienta a la hora de realizar su manejo quirúrgico, la cual es la única forma de tratar estas anomalías sin afectar la dentición permanente original.
