Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on quality of life, health and income in families with and without socioeconomic risk: a cross-sectional study

Objective: To compare the quality of life, health perception and income between low socioeconomic status families and families without exposure to socioeconomic risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: 41 mothers of healthy full-term infants (≥ 37 weeks) participated in this cross-sectional study. They were subdivided into two groups: 1) socioeconomic risk (R-G); and 2) without socioeconomic risk (SR-G). Quality of life was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-Bref). The health perception and monthly income were measured using a questionnaire prepared by the authors. Results: A significant difference was found between the R-G and SR-G groups for the environment domain (p = 0.001) in WHOQOL-Bref. Health perception of mothers in the R-G during the COVID-19 pandemic was between good (52.6%) and regular (36.8%) while most mothers in the SR-G rated health as good (81, 8%). Of families without socioeconomic risk, 59% needed recourse to government assistance while most low socioeconomic status families (89.5%) benefited from emergency government assistance. Conclusions: Families with low socioeconomic status have a worse quality of life with regard to the environment, worse perception of health, and decreased family income when compared to families without socioeconomic risk.
