Abstract

Objective: To describe the relationship between intestinal dysbiosis and overweight, highlighting the therapeutic effects of probiotics in the treatment of this clinical condition. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, with searches in PubMed and Virtual Health Library (BVS) databases, with the Online System of Search and Analysis of Medical Literature (MEDLINE) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Sciences. of Health (LILACS) indexed in this last base. The descriptors used for the searches were: “microbiota”, “obesity/obesity”, “probiotics/probiotics” and “biomarkers/biomarks” and the Boolean operators AND/AND and OR/OR for the crossing of words. Original articles from the last 10 years were selected, with abstracts and free texts available in full. Results: Twelve articles were eligible, which showed that several probiotic strains have anti-obesity effects, reducing adiposity markers, such as body weight, body mass index, visceral adipose tissue, waist and hip circumference, waist/height ratio, percentage of body fat and conicity index, thus helping in the prevention and treatment of excess weight. Conclusion: Supplementation with probiotics, especially of some specific strains, is of great relevance for the prevention and treatment of excess weight, and thus can be used in the clinical practice of nutritionists.
