Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of oral symptoms and systemic conditions on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) in patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD). An observational and cross-sectional study was carried out with a convenience sample of patients with NMD at the Neurorehabilitation Outpatient Clinic of a University Hospital. Data included information about patients' sociodemographic characteristics, underlying disease, comorbidities and medications, and oral symptoms such as oral burning, dysgeusia, dysphagia and sialorrhea. The index of Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) was also applied. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire was used to evaluate the OHRQoL. The collected data were submitted to statistical analysis using the chi-square test, considering significant values of p<0.05. Of the 30 patients with NMD, 46.7% were female, and the mean age was 50.7±13.8. The most frequent disease was Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. In 66.7% of participants, there were comorbidities, with 46.7% presenting hypertension and 33.3% depression. There was a high prevalence of oral symptoms: dysphagia (53.3%), sialorrhea (46.7%), xerostomia (36.7%), dysgeusia (26.7%), and burning mouth (13.3%). The mean DTM was 18.8, and the mean OHIP-14 was 15.43 ± 10.7. There was a statistically significant association between quality of life and underlying disease (p = 0.011) and dysphagia (p = 0.001). The results suggest that oral symptoms are common in patients with NMD, and the general conditions and oral symptoms affect the quality of life of these patients, being perceived in psychological aspects and pain.
