Relation between sleep quality and academic achievement among medicine students: a systematic review

Abstract

Introduction: Poor sleep quality can be associated with several physical, psychological and cognitive problems. Considering the excessive academic load and study hours, family expectations and the competitive environment, medical students are especially vulnerable to sleep problems and their consequences. Objective: Conduct a literature review of cross-sectional studies on the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance of medical students. Methodology: Systematic review of cross-sectional studies published in the last 5 years, aiming to answer the question: "What is the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance of medical students?". Results: Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 articles were selected, 10 of which point to a correlation between poor sleep quality and low academic performance. DISCUSSION: Sleep is essential for cognitive functions and memory consolidation. Therefore, most studies stated that poor sleep quality can impact the academic performance of medical students. Conclusion: Worse academic performance is statistically associated with poor sleep quality. Despite other variables, the greater impact of the sleep variable on academic activity became clear. Thus, changes are needed to improve sleep quality and well-being of medical students.
