New Law on tubal ligation in Brazil and its social effects: a literature review

Tubal ligation is a sterilization method, in which the promoted mechanism is based on preventing the union of gametes and consequently eliminating the chances of fertilization. For the procedure to be carried out, there are constitutionally imposed rules, and recently there have been changes in the prerequisites, with the inclusion of Law nº 14,443. The present study is based on the guiding question: “What are the changes in the rules that address tubal ligation and its social impacts?”. Thus, this study consists of an analysis of the possible social impacts that the new Law may generate. This is an integrative literature review, based on scientific productions from the databases: National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Virtual Health Library (BVS), Google Scholar and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and terminologies registered in the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCs), published from 2013 to 2023. Tubal ligation proved to be a frequent practice and linked to important themes, involving religion, politics, ethics, demographic and social issues. The new Law consequently impacts on all these aspects, which highlights the need for measures to disseminate knowledge to the public.
