Deaf person's resilience processes based on established family relationships

Based on a study conducted in a PhD program, one participant and his family were selected. Thus, this article aims to present the contributions of a resilient family in the process of living as a deaf person. This is a case study of a deaf undergraduate student and his family, which stood out among the ten deaf Higher Education students and their families, collaborators of the original investigation, for their commitment to the deaf culture, the “deaf movement”, his education and their respect and acceptance of his condition of being deaf. An in-depth interview was conducted in June, 2019. The data analysis method utilized was thematic analysis and the pillars of family resilience were defined as thematic nuclei: family beliefs, open communication process, organizational standards. In this case, family resilience contributed to the resourcefulness of one of its (deaf) members by accepting the difference, not placing him as an outcast, and giving him the same opportunities as their hearing daughter. That led the deaf son to understand the difference between the hearing and the deaf, but not to paralyze him, therefore, he perceives himself in the perspective of difference and not disability. From the case presented, it was identified that the family under study, when assuming positive attitudes in the face of unexpected facts and facing the course of life as something to be faced with balance and good beliefs about the possibility of resolutions, becomes resilient and leads its members to develop resilience.
