Asociación bidireccional entre periodontitis y diabetes mellitus tipo 2: una revisión de literatura

El vínculo que tiene la periodontitis con enfermedades sistémicas como la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) se ha venido estudiando desde hace mucho tiempo. La evidencia actual sugiere que los mecanismos que subyacen a dicho vínculo están relacionados con los mediadores inflamatorios presentes en ambas enfermedades, y señala que además ambas enfermedades representan un factor de riesgo de manera mutua para desarrollar cada enfermedad, respectivamente. Asimismo, se ha estudiado ampliamente el impacto que puede tener el tratamiento periodontal sobre la DM2, lo cual pude desarrollar nuevas pautas de tratamiento para esta enfermedad metabólica. Sin embargo, actualmente dicha situación no está muy clara pese a los estudios clínicos que se han realizado. Se sugiere que dicho tratamiento puede mejor el control glucémico y disminuir complicaciones relacionadas con la diabetes. El objetivo de la presente revisión es informar sobre los posibles mecanismos fisiopatológicos que relacionan de forma bidireccional a DM2 con la periodontitis. De igual manera, abordar de forma general el efecto que puede tener el tratamiento periodontal sobre el control de la DM2.
