Relación entre la infección por SARS-CoV-2 y la fertilidad masculina: ¿qué se sabe?

Resumen

Introducción: Las pruebas existentes sugieren que el sistema reproductor humano puede ser potencialmente vulnerable a la infección por el nuevo coronavirus. Sin embargo, la asociación entre la infección por el SARS-CoV-2 y la salud reproductiva es actualmente poco conocida. Objetivo: Analizar y sintetizar la información principal sobre el efecto de la infección por SARS-CoV-2 en la fertilidad masculina. Métodos: Revisión bibliográfica integradora que realizó búsquedas en Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Scientific Electronic Library Online y Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe de Informação em Ciências da Saúde, entre diciembre de 2021 y junio de 2022, con los descriptores "SARS-CoV-2", "sperm", "semen", e "infertility, male", que buscaba responder a la pregunta: "¿Cuál es la relación existente entre la infección por SARS-CoV-2 y la fertilidad masculina?" La búsqueda dio como resultado 454 artículos, de los cuales se seleccionaron 13 porque cumplían los criterios de elegibilidad. Resultados: No se detectó la presencia de ácido ribonucleico viral en el semen de los hombres recuperados de COVID-19, sin embargo, se evidenció una disminución del recuento y la concentración de espermatozoides, así como una reducción de su motilidad y cambios macroscópicos en el semen, factores que pueden dificultar la fecundación. Conclusión: El sistema reproductor masculino puede ser potencialmente vulnerable a la infección por el SARS-CoV-2, resaltando la importancia de instituir acciones que garanticen la asistencia integral a la salud reproductiva del hombre tras la infección.
