Implicaciones de la pandemia de COVID-19 en el consumo de productos con fines profilácticos controvertidos en el estado de Bahia, Brasil

Resumen

La pandemia de COVID-19 influyó en los patrones de comportamiento de la población brasileña, especialmente en lo que respecta a la atención de la salud. El uso descontrolado de remedios caseros, suplementos, especias y medicamentos alopáticos difundidos principalmente a través de internet, redes sociales y aplicaciones de mensajería ha provocado un aumento en la demanda de estos productos con el fin de prevenir o tratar las manifestaciones clínicas provocadas por el nuevo coronavirus. De esta forma, el objetivo de este estudio fue verificar cambios en el consumo de artículos popularmente conocidos en el tratamiento de síndromes gripales e identificar las fuentes más utilizadas por los participantes para buscar información sobre la pandemia y pautas terapéuticas para tratar la COVID-19. Utilizando una metodología exploratoria descriptiva, este estudio recopiló datos a través de un cuestionario en línea en una muestra de la población bahiana, con 323 participantes. Los resultados mostraron que hubo un aumento significativo en el consumo de algunas vitaminas y suplementos (promedio de 22%), especias y alimentos (promedio de 58%) y medicamentos (promedio de 15%). Internet fue la principal fuente de información sobre la pandemia (86,3%), sin embargo, el 95% de los encuestados dijeron que los profesionales de la salud estaban capacitados para recomendar terapias adecuadas para COVID-19. Por lo tanto, el uso racional y guiado de cualquier suplemento, medicamento y formulaciones caseras debe ser imperativo ante cualquier enfermedad, como el COVID-19, y a pesar de los beneficios que propaga el saber popular, el inadecuado autosuministro y el uso de medicamentos sin la debida de seguridad y eficacia comprobada, puede provocar reacciones adversas o incluso daños irreversibles a la salud.
