Relação entre Doença Periodontal e Alzheimer - Uma revisão de literatura

Este artigo investiga a possível relação entre a doença de Alzheimer (DA) e a doença periodontal (DP), duas condições prevalentes que afetam predominantemente a população idosa. O objetivo foi examinar e avaliar a associação entre essas doenças, considerando estudos epidemiológicos e clínicos recentes. A metodologia envolveu uma revisão de literatura utilizando bases de dados como PubMed, Scielo e Cochrane Library, com um escopo definido entre os anos de 2013 e 2023. Foram incluídos estudos que exploraram as relações entre DA e DP, enquanto estudos múltiplos ou não alinhados aos objetivos foram excluídos. Os resultados indicam uma possível ligação entre DP e DA, evidenciada pela presença de inflamação crônica e compartilhamento de mediadores pró-inflamatórios em ambas as condições. Além disso, foi observada uma associação entre DP e declínio cognitivo em pacientes com DA, sugerindo um possível papel da saúde bucal na progressão da doença neurodegenerativa. Conclui-se que a compreensão dessa conexão tem implicações importantes para a prática clínica, destacando a necessidade de intervenções terapêuticas e preventivas direcionadas à saúde bucal como parte integrante do manejo da DA em populações idosas.
