Associação bidirecional entre Periodontite e Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2: uma revisão de literatura

Resumo

A ligação que a periodontite tem com doenças sistémicas como a Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) tem sido estudada há muito tempo. Os dados atuais sugerem que os mecanismos subjacentes a esta ligação estão relacionados com os mediadores inflamatórios presentes em ambas as doenças, e apontam que ambas as doenças representam um fator de risco mútuo para o desenvolvimento de cada doença, respectivamente.  Do mesmo modo, o impacto que o tratamento periodontal pode ter no DM2 foi amplamente estudado, o que pode levar ao desenvolvimento de novas directrizes de tratamento para esta doença metabólica. No entanto, esta situação não é atualmente muito clara, apesar dos estudos clínicos que tem sido realizados. Sugere-se que tal tratamento pode melhorar o controlo glicémico e diminuir as complicações relacionadas com a diabetes. O objetivo da presente revisão é informar sobre os possíveis mecanismos fisiopatológicos que bi-direcionalmente relacionam o DM2 com a periodontite. Do mesmo modo, para abordar de forma geral o efeito que o tratamento periodontal pode ter no controle do DM2.
