O efeito Werther e sua relação com taxas de tentativas de suicídio: uma revisão narrativa

Resumo

O suicídio é um tema complexo e muitas variáveis podem estar envolvidas no problema. Pressupõe-se que casos de tentativas de suicídio poderiam fornecer justificativas para o ato. Assim, procurou-se neste estudo encontrar indícios que apoiassem ou não a existência do efeito Werther, ou efeito contágio, na literatura científica atual. O objetivo desta revisão narrativa foi verificar se os dados disponíveis confirmavam aumento de casos de suicídio ou tentativas após um primeiro caso. Os achados indicam que o efeito é real e que está intimamente relacionado ao modo como ocorre a repercussão de um suicídio, na mídia tradicional ou por outros meios. A revisão encontrou dados que apoiam a existência do efeito contágio em várias partes do mundo, na Europa, América do Norte, e grande parte deles na Ásia, o que indica que o fenômeno não é restrito a uma dada cultura. A revisão narrativa concentrou-se em quatro bases de dados, nos últimos dez anos, nas línguas portuguesa e inglesa, e teve avaliação de dois pesquisadores.
