Causas e consequências da disfunção temporomandibular

O termo desordens temporomandibulares (DTM) engloba diversas circunstancias que atingem a articulação temporomandibular , os músculos mastigatórios ou ambos. A DTM pode ser dolorosa e não dolorosa. Além de causar desconforto sensorial, as DTM dolorosas são emocionalmente desvantajosas, causando sentimentos como ansiedade, estresse, culpa, miséria, isolamento e até mesmo dificuldades para dormir, o que pode levar ao desenvolvimento de depressão. Para a construção deste trabalho foi feito um levantamento bibliográfico nas bases de dados SciVerse Scopus, Scientific Eletronic Library Online (Scielo), U.S. National Library of Medicine (PUBMED) e ScienceDirect, utilizando o gerenciador de referências Mendeley. DTM são um conjunto complexo de distúrbios que muitas vezes podem levar à dor crônica. À medida que os avanços na pesquisa são feitos, uma maior compreensão da etiologia multifatorial da DTM dolorosa está se desenvolvendo. Isso provavelmente levará ao desenvolvimento de melhores estratégias de prevenção, diagnóstico e tratamento de DTM, que visam mecanismos individuais e fatores contribuintes. Aconselha-se um quadro biopsicossocial de cuidados para o tratamento da DTM, abrangendo uma abordagem multidisciplinar através de um único caminho de tratamento integrado. A pesquisa sugere que o estabelecimento de centros regionais especializados em dor orofacial pode fornecer uma abordagem de gerenciamento mais simplificada e econômica na atenção secundária ou terciária.
