Feasibility of implementing customized mouthguards as personal protective equipment in the riot police of the Military Police of the State of Alagoas

The Riot Police Company of the Military Police of the State of Alagoas (CPChoque/PMAL) carries out riot operations in sporting events, prison riots, civil disturbances, and repossessions, among others. In this context, the risks of oral and facial trauma are frequent and could have their consequences reduced with the use of Custom Mouthguard (CM). The present study aims to analyze the compatibility of CM with the operational service and the procedures for implementing this oral device as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for military police officers of CPChoque/PMAL. The methodology used was of an exploratory qualitative nature based on current legislation and existing literature. It was found that CMs are compatible with military police service and that there are legal ways to acquire them. It was concluded that the implementation of CMs in CPChoque/PMAL depends on convincing the budget officers, the interest of the institution, and the subjectivity of the managers. To contract a qualified company to manufacture the new PPE using the institution's funding, it is suggested. This work enables the discussion of including CM as PPE to the CPChoque/PMAL personnel, allowing PMAL to be at the forefront of other state military institutions regarding the stomatognathic system's protection of its commanders.
