Perceptions of nursing students and preceptors regarding first aid workshops in the school environment: An experience report

First aid (FA) consists of immediate care actions intended for an individual who has been the victim of an accident or sudden illness, when their physical condition represents a life-threatening risk. This study aims to describe the experience of nursing students and preceptors in conducting a first aid workshop in public schools located in the Metropolitan Region II of the state of Rio de Janeiro. An experience report was created based on the implementation of in-person first aid workshops in a school setting. The target audience for the workshops were teachers and staff from public schools located in the municipalities of Itaboraí, Niterói, and São Gonçalo, which belong to Metropolitan Region II of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The workshop allowed nursing students to recognize that, despite the existence of the Lucas Law since 2018, there is still a significant knowledge gap among teachers and school staff regarding first aid. This gap is present from undergraduate studies onwards; there is a lack of training courses and subjects in the curriculum for teachers.
