Abstract

Biological invasions are among the greatest threats to biodiversity and are strongly linked to human activities. In this context, environmental education is an important strategy for preventing these occurrences by influencing behaviors that facilitate the introduction and spread of invasive exotic species. This study aims to critically examine the role of environmental education as a strategy for preventing biological invasions, focusing on the Brazilian context, highlighting its potential, limitations, and possibilities for biodiversity conservation. The analysis considered ecological, social, and educational factors, highlighting the potential of participatory approaches, such as citizen science, informal education, and the use of digital technologies to increase social engagement. The results show that strategies based solely on the transmission of information have limited effectiveness in promoting behavioral change, making it necessary to incorporate elements of the social sciences and environmental psychology. Furthermore, the effectiveness of environmental education depends on its integration with public policies and management instruments, especially in strategic sectors such as aquaculture, the ornamental species trade, and the management of protected areas. In this context, citizen science emerges as a valuable tool for environmental monitoring and social participation. It is concluded that environmental education, when combined with scientific knowledge, governance, and social engagement, can significantly contribute to preventing biological invasions by acting directly on the human factors that underpin this process.
