The role of the pharmacist in combating the indiscriminate use of benzodiazepines among users of the psychosocial care center II in the municipality of Itaituba, State of Pará (PA), Brazil

Objective: This study evaluated the role of pharmacists in combating the indiscriminate use of benzodiazepines among users of the Psychosocial Care Center II (CAPS II) in the municipality of Itaituba-PA, as well as identifying the participants' profile, understanding the factors associated with the use of these medications, and describing the strategies adopted to promote rational use. Methodology: Field and documentary research, of a qualitative nature and descriptive approach, carried out at the CAPS II in Itaituba-PA, with the participation of 25 users of benzodiazepines and pharmacists working at the unit. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews and document analysis of medical records. The sample was defined by convenience, including being in active treatment at the service, having a prescription for benzodiazepines, and freely consenting to participate in the research. Results: Of the 25 research participants, 18 were female (72%). The age range showed a higher concentration between 31 and 40 years, with 8 participants (32%). In terms of education, 9 participants (36%) had completed elementary school. Regarding the length of follow-up, 13 users (52%) reported receiving services for more than 1 year. Regarding the guidance received from the pharmacist, 24 participants (96%) trusted and considered it important. The use of benzodiazepines among the participants was frequent, which increases the risk of adverse events; however, the pharmacist's role significantly contributes to guiding users. Conclusion: The pharmacist plays a strategic role in CAPS II (Psychosocial Care Centers), contributing to the reduction of indiscriminate use of benzodiazepines, strengthening care practices, and promoting the health of users.
