Analysis of crimes against animals in Brazil: Main crimes and the role of the Veterinarian

The growing social concern for animal welfare has driven changes in Brazilian legislation, resulting in more severe criminal classifications and the expansion of the responsibility of various actors. This objective work analyzes the main crimes committed against animals in Brazil in recent years, highlighting applicable legal provisions, criminal typology, and, above all, the role of the veterinarian in the identification, prevention, registration, communication, combating, and expert analysis of these cases. The research encompasses the historical evolution of animal protection in the country, the current normative framework – with emphasis on the Environmental Crimes Law (Law No. 9.605/1998) and the Sansão Law (Law No. 14.064/2020) – and the characterization of the most recurrent offenses, such as mistreatment, abandonment, wildlife trafficking, animal fighting, and zoophilia. The impacts of these crimes on public health, collective security, and environmental balance are also discussed. The methodology is based on a qualitative bibliographic review, grounded in scientific articles, legislation, institutional reports, and news reports. The study reaffirms the relevance of the veterinarian's role, highlighting their importance in forensic investigations, sanitary inspections, education and social awareness, as well as strategic cooperation with police and judicial authorities. The results demonstrate a growing incidence of animal abuse, abandonment, and trafficking, as well as the leading role of veterinary medicine professionals in the legal and forensic spheres. It concludes that their work is essential for protecting animal rights and preventing widespread violence.
