Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence, and bariatric surgery is characterized as one of the most effective interventions for the treatment of severe obesity. However, significant weight loss results in complications such as excess skin, sagging, and psychosocial impairment. In this context, dermatofunctional physiotherapy emerges as a therapeutic possibility to promote tissue recovery and improve self-esteem. Objective: To review the scientific literature in order to identify dermatofunctional physiotherapy treatment protocols for patients in the postoperative period of bariatric surgery. Methodology: This is a narrative literature review, carried out in the PubMed, SciELO, PEDro databases and ABRAFIDEF proceedings. Articles published in the last five years, in Portuguese and English, were included using descriptors related to bariatric surgery, dermatofunctional physiotherapy, and skin laxity. Results: Of the 1,191 studies initially identified, only one fully met the inclusion criteria. The resource identified in the literature was radiofrequency, indicated as a complementary therapy to revitalize the skin, stimulate collagen production, and restore remaining tone after massive weight loss. Conclusion: A critical scarcity of scientific production in the area was evident, reflecting that, despite the high volume of bariatric surgeries performed, patients still lack validated physiotherapy protocols. The urgent need for new clinical and observational studies to support evidence-based practice in post-bariatric dermatofunctional physiotherapy is highlighted.
