This article aims to present the characterization of the demographic dynamics of Nampula City, in Mozambique. Based on the most recent census data, and with the purpose of highlighting the housing deficit in Nampula City (which totals 743,125 inhabitants, according to the INE, 2017), a preliminary bibliographic review was conducted. This review resulted in the theoretical framework that supported the present study. The elaborated theoretical framework allowed for a concise historical analysis of the housing issue in Mozambique, from the colonial period to the present-day context. The data used indicate that the inferred housing deficit is more qualitative than quantitative in nature, at least for the objectives of this research. While the indicators and variables were quantified, the precariousness of the materials used in the construction of the walls and roofs of most dwellings is emphasized. The standard of the residences reinforces this finding, pointing to a predominance of constructions that utilize a mixture of materials and unprocessed or unimproved organic material.
