Introduction: The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a place where the most critically ill patients in a hospital unit are found, most of whom have compromised immune systems, which makes them major targets for hospital infections. Thus, they become a major challenge for health, since the cost of care and stay of these patients becomes high. In this context, the nurse proves to be a fundamental ally for the implementation of effective guidelines for the prevention and control of these infections. Objective: To discuss, through the literature, the role of the nurse in the prevention of hospital infections in the ICU. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, using the LILACS, BDENF, MEDLINE and Scielo databases, complete and free articles from 2014 to 2024, written in Portuguese and English, with the descriptors “intensive care unit”, “nursing care”, “hospital infection”. The exclusion criteria were incomplete articles, those that did not answer the guiding question and paid articles. Conclusion: The importance of preventing ARIs in ICUs and the central role of nurses in this process can be concluded. The adoption of evidence-based practices, combined with investment in education and research, makes it possible to significantly reduce the impact of ARIs and ensure higher quality care for patients.
