Knowledge of the residents of Pindamonhangaba about the correct disposal of medicines

The improper disposal of medicines is a global public health problem that affects living beings and the environment in which they live. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge of the population of the city of Pindamonhangaba, interior of the state of São Paulo, about the correct disposal of expired and/ or unused medicines, the collection points for disposal and the importance of properly disposing of drug residues. An online questionnaire with objective questions was used in a sample of 106 participants from the municipality mentioned above. Of these, 67% said they did not know how to properly dispose of medications. Regarding the form of disposal, 53.7% stated that they disposed of domestic/common waste. On the class of drugs that most acquired without a prescription and, consequently, the most discarded, the group of analgesics was the most cited. 56.6% of the respondents said they did not know collection points for reverse logistics of medicines in the city. This study showed that the majority of the population does not know the correct way to dispose of medicines, highlighting the lack of health education in the city and initiatives aimed at maintaining the environment and proper management of household pharmaceutical waste.
