Abstract

Orthognathic surgery is indicated to correct dentofacial deformities, bringing functional and aesthetic benefits. The objective of this study was to evaluate and describe the improvements observed in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery, considering their main complaints related to masticatory function, facial aesthetics, oral function and psychological aspects after the procedure. This study evaluated the psychosocial impact, self-esteem and quality of life of 15 patients submitted to the procedure in a dental clinic in Guaratinguetá-SP. Sociodemographic questionnaires, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (UNIFESP-EPM), the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) were applied. The results showed that most of the participants presented levels of self-esteem distributed between the low, intermediate and high classifications, with an overall average close to the limit of the intermediate range. Regarding the quality of life related to oral health, a predominance of mild to moderate impact was observed. Regarding dental aesthetics, part of the sample reported significant psychosocial repercussions, while other participants indicated good acceptance of their own appearance. These findings highlight that, in addition to the functional benefits obtained with surgery, emotional and social aspects should also be monitored in an integrated manner. It is concluded that the interdisciplinary approach is essential to contemplate in a broad manner the different dimensions involved in the rehabilitation process.
