Nursing assistance in preventing postpartum depression in postpartum women who experience neonatal intensive care unit

PPD is an emotional disorder that can affect the physical and mental health of postpartum women, compromising the mother-baby bond and family dynamics. The risk of developing this condition increases when the newborn requires NICU admission. Objective: To describe the importance of nursing care in preventing PPD in postpartum women admitted to the NICU. Method: Integrative literature review, conducted in February and March 2025. The literature search was conducted in the VHL, BDENF, LILACS, and INDEXPSI databases. A total of 51.869 articles were found, and after applying the filters and inclusion criteria, 18 articles were included in the study. Results: This review demonstrated that the postpartum woman's experience with the newborn admitted to the NICU is a risk factor for the development of PPD, as it intensifies negative feelings. Nurses' prevention strategies include active and empathetic listening, clear communication, humanized care, quality prenatal care, encouraging breastfeeding, use of the kangaroo method, family inclusion in care, and psychological support. The study highlights the importance of training nurses and implementing care protocols for early detection and development of interventions. Conclusion: By integrating technical skills into a humanized care practice, nurses play an essential role in preventing PPD and promoting well-being. However, a limitation is the lack of studies that more deeply address nurses' role in preventing PPD in postpartum women with children admitted to the NICU, highlighting the need for further research in this area.
