Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes progressive inflammation and joint damage, affecting individuals of all ages and sexes. Periodontitis, in turn, is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, caused by the interaction between bacteria and the immune response, resulting in progressive tissue destruction. This study aims to analyze and synthesize the existing literature on the relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis, focusing on the implications for the knowledge and practice of dentists in the comprehensive care of patients with both conditions. An integrative literature review was conducted, selecting 21 articles according to eligibility criteria to answer the guiding question: “What is the current state of scientific knowledge on the bidirectional relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis, and what are the implications for dentists’ knowledge, clinical practice, and continuing education in the management of these patients?” Despite growing evidence of the association between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis, studies reveal that both patients and healthcare professionals have limited knowledge of this relationship, and a gap in the literature regarding the role of the dentist in relation to these comorbidities is evident, which may be attributed to the historical lack of integration between medicine and dentistry, hindering a deeper understanding and a more effective approach to these conditions.
