Palliative care in the oncological context: Challenges and strategies in nursing practice

Introduction: Cancer is a disease characterized by abnormal and accelerated cell proliferation, leading to the formation of tumors and the risk of metastasis, representing a significant challenge to public health. In this context, palliative care is essential to promote quality of life by prioritizing pain relief, symptom control, and comprehensive support for patients and their families. Thus, this study sought to answer the following guiding question: what are the main challenges and strategies adopted by nursing in the implementation of palliative care for oncology patients? Objective: To reflect on the main challenges and strategies adopted by nurses in providing palliative care to oncology patients, with emphasis on pain management, comfort, communication, empathy, and spirituality. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted through searches in national and international databases (PubMed, SciELO, VHL, LILACS, CINAHL) and institutional guidelines (WHO, etc.), considering articles published between 2015 and 2024, in Portuguese and English. Results: The identified challenges include limited technical and emotional training of nurses, communication barriers with patients and families, late introduction of palliative care, institutional weaknesses in policies and structure, and emotional overload. Highlighted strategies: continuing education, specific training, active listening, spiritual approach, empathy, humanized care, multiprofessional collaboration, and clear institutional protocols. Conclusion: Nursing practice in oncological palliative care requires both technical and sensitive competencies. The implementation of public and institutional policies that strengthen training, communication, spirituality, and institutional support is essential to provide dignified, comprehensive, and humanized care.
