Compuestos antimicrobianos en miel de abeja sin aguijón (Meliponinos): Una revisión integradora

Resumen

La miel de abejas sin aguijón (Meliponini) ha surgido como una prometedora fuente de agentes antimicrobianos naturales. El objetivo de esta revisión fue destacar los estudios relacionados con los componentes antimicrobianos de la miel de abeja sin aguijón realizados en los últimos años. Para ello, se consultaron las bases de datos PubMed, SciELO y Google Scholar del período comprendido entre 2014 y 2025. Los resultados demostraron que los flavonoides (ej.: crisina, quercetina), los ácidos fenólicos y el peróxido de hidrógeno actúan sinérgicamente, rompiendo membranas celulares, inhibiendo la síntesis proteica y desestabilizando biopelículas bacterianas. Estudios in vitro comprobaron su eficacia contra cepas Gram positivas y Gram negativas, incluidas especies resistentes. Sin embargo, la variabilidad en la composición química, influenciada por factores geográficos y florales, sumada a la ausencia de estandarización y regulación específica, limitan su aplicación clínica. Se concluye que, aunque la miel de meliponinos presenta un notable potencial como alternativa antimicrobiana, son necesarios más estudios in vivo y el desarrollo de protocolos de estandarización para viabilizar su uso terapéutico. Este trabajo refuerza la importancia de la conservación de estas especies de abejas y de la valorización de sus productos como recursos medicinales sostenibles.
