Therapeutic use of inhaled corticosteroids in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia: A literature review of the last 25 years

Introduction: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is defined as a condition characterized by the dependence on high-concentration oxygen therapy and/or mechanical ventilation up to the 36th post-conception week, associated with radiological changes. The objective of this review is to critically and systematically analyze the efficacy and safety of inhaled corticosteroids in the management of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants, allowing for a conclusion based on the best available evidence to date. A narrative literature review was conducted of documents found on the official websites of PubMed®, Scielo®, Cochrane Library®, Science Direct®, and Springer Link®, available between 2000 and 2025, with public access. Results: The searches resulted in a total of 1492 articles, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 articles were selected. Conclusion: The literature review shows that although most studies demonstrate positive results in the use of inhaled corticosteroids, such as Beclomethasone and Budesonide, there is still no standardization of doses or duration of use. Despite the advances, significant divergences still exist regarding their efficacy, safety, and long-term effects. This heterogeneity reflects the complexity of managing BPD, which is why it is essential to critically and systematically analyze the efficacy and safety of inhaled corticosteroids, allowing for a conclusion based on the best available evidence to date.
