Abstract

This study aimed to analyze and compare the epidemiological profile of intraluminal angioplasties of peripheral vessels performed with and without stents in Northeastern Brazil between 2015 and 2024. This was an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive epidemiological study with a quantitative approach based on secondary data from the SIH/SUS (National Health System). Procedures with and without stents in peripheral vessels were analyzed, considering the number of hospitalizations, length of hospital stay, costs, and mortality rate in all Northeastern states. A total of 21,568 procedures were recorded in the Northeast, 80.7% of which were performed without stents. Bahia had the highest number of hospitalizations, length of stay, and hospital expenses. The data revealed a total cost of over R$70 million, with an overall mortality rate of 0.91%. Although procedures without stents predominate, there was no direct correlation with a reduction in hospital stay. Pernambuco stood out with 93% of stent-free angioplasties. Variation was also observed over the years, with an increase in procedures until 2022, a slight decline in 2023, and recovery in 2024. Therefore, stent-free angioplasty is widely prevalent in the Northeast region, indicating possible structural constraints, but also adaptation to available resources. The data obtained highlight the importance of equitable public policies and the need for future studies evaluating the clinical effectiveness and cost-benefit of these interventions in the long term.
