Evaluation of the effectiveness of modern dressings in the amputation stump healing process: An integrative literature review

Amputation stump healing is an essential rehabilitation process, influenced by the choice of dressing, which impacts the speed of closure, infection prevention, and preparation for prosthetics. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effectiveness of modern dressings used in the amputation stump healing process. The survey adopted a qualitative approach, with bibliographic research and was exploratory and descriptive in nature. Data collection was conducted through the analysis of scientific articles, technical publications, and clinical guidelines available in databases such as SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar, covering publications published between 2015 and 2025. It was found that so many articles were about the stump that 54 articles were included, and duplicate studies, those dealing exclusively with traditional dressings, research that did not address surgical wounds or amputation-related etiologies, and opinion pieces and editorials without a scientific basis were excluded. Therefore, 36 publications were excluded, resulting in 18 articles selected for full reading and analysis. Modern dressings represent a significant advancement in the treatment of amputation stumps, promoting not only proper healing but also the physical and psychological well-being of patients. Further research is recommended, particularly focusing on comparative clinical studies and cost-benefit analysis, in addition to ongoing training of healthcare professionals on the appropriate selection and use of these resources.
