The present study was proposed to characterize whether there is staining of composite resin samples with different surface treatments after mouthwashes with and without alcohol use for limited period. One hundred light-curing composite resin specimens, color EB1, with surface characteristics of untreated on one side of the sample, and polished on the other, distributed into 10 groups (G): G1- coffee, G2- distilled water, G3- 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate with alcohol, G4- 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate without alcohol, G5- cetylperidine chloride with alcohol, G6- cetylperidine chloride without alcohol, G7- essential oils with alcohol, G8- essential oils without alcohol, G9- stabilized chlorine dioxide at 0.02%, G10- 0.06% chlorhexidine digluconate with alcohol. In each group, 10 samples remained immersed in the products for a time of use mimicking 1 year. Three blind calibrated examiners assigned scores to characterize their staining. The Kruskal-Wallis test with a 5% significance level, complemented by the Student-Newman-Keuls test, showed that staining occurred, influenced by mouthwash and surface polishing. G1, G3, and G7 presented higher staining scores (p<0.01) regardless of whether the surface was polished or not. Within the limits of this study, it can be stated that the dentist must be attentive to the indication of mouthwashes for his patients, since, in the presence of aesthetic light-curing composite resin restorations, all promoted color change, and essential oils and 0.12% chlorhexidine associated with alcohol were related to greater staining on both polished and unpolished surfaces.
