Women’s experiences with urinary tract infection during pregnancy: Prevention strategies and impacts from a nursing perspective

Pregnancy is a significant phase in a woman's life, characterized by profound physiological and psychological changes that directly impact maternal health. Among these changes, the urinary system becomes more susceptible to infections. The overall objective is to investigate the main causes, prevention methods, and worsening of the condition, emphasizing the contribution of nurses. This is a quantitative, retrospective, and descriptive study of pregnant women who experienced UTIs during the three trimesters of pregnancy, based on a questionnaire-based interview conducted in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. The results focus on prevention and show that the physiological and hormonal changes of pregnancy favor UTIs, with 80% being bacterial (primarily E. coli) and 20% fungal. These changes are associated with vaginal pH and reduced immunity. Maintaining hydration, intimate hygiene, frequent urination, prenatal monitoring, correct medication use, and guidance on signs of complications are crucial. UTIs during pregnancy occur in the second trimester due to changes in the urinary tract. Care involves monitoring signs and adhering to prenatal care. UTI symptoms include dysuria, urinary frequency, urinary urgency, abdominal pain, and low back pain, as well as changes in urine output. Low back pain is common and may indicate pyelonephritis, especially when associated with fever. These conditions require special attention, as they increase maternal and fetal risks. Treatment involves antibiotics and antifungals, and clinical follow-up, new tests, and ultrasound monitoring are essential. Professional guidance on warning signs, prevention, medications, diet, and hydration is essential for maternal and fetal safety. It is concluded that the approach to these patients should be preventive to avoid complications for the pregnant woman.
