Legal aspects of orofacial harmonization: A narrative literature review

Orofacial harmonization (OFH), recognized as a dental specialty by the Federal Council of Dentistry in 2019, represents a significant expansion of the professional scope of dental surgeons. With the increasing demand for aesthetic procedures and the emphasis on comprehensive health, OFH has gained visibility, especially in the post–COVID-19 pandemic period. However, the accelerated growth of the specialty has also brought ethical and legal challenges. This narrative literature review aims to analyze the main legal aspects of OFH from the perspective of Forensic Dentistry, a field essential to ensuring the legal security of clinical practices in Dentistry. Although data from the Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO) indicate a substantial increase in specialized professionals, the forensic literature has not yet reflected a proportional number of cases involving OFH, which may be related to the recent recognition of the specialty and the interruption of clinical care during the pandemic. Based on the analysis of legislation, resolutions, and jurisprudence, it is concluded that strengthening the ethical and legal practice of professionals is essential for consolidating OFH as a technical, safe, and socially recognized field within Dentistry.
