Abstract

Introduction: The quadriceps is a crucial muscle group involved in various types of exercises and activities of daily living. Furthermore, dysfunctions within this muscle group increase the risk of injury and reduced performance in daily activities. Objective: To compare, using electromyography, which portions of the quadriceps muscle exhibit greater activity during specific exercises in sedentary individuals and physically active individuals. Methods: The sample comprised 18 healthy volunteers, aged 20-30 years, with no comorbidities, divided into two groups: sedentary (SED, n=9) and physically active (PAF, n=9). A portable MyoSytem-I PS4 electromyograph was used to assess quadriceps muscle activation. Results: During rest, conventional squat, and sumo squat conditions, the PAF group demonstrated significantly higher electromyographic activity (p<0.05) in the right rectus femoris. Conversely, during knee extension at 30° and 90°, the SED group exhibited significantly greater electromyographic activity (p<0.05) in the right rectus femoris. Conclusion: All these exercises are effective for strengthening with a focus on these muscles. The choice of exercise can be based on individual preference or the need to target a specific muscle belly.
