Abstract

Introduction: Hospitalization is a period of significant stress and anxiety. This report describes four strategies implemented in a General Cardiology Unit of a specialized São Paulo State Health Department hospital to enhance patient coping. The objective is to describe a resident nurse's experience in applying these coping strategies as a process of hospitalization improvement. Method: This is a qualitative, descriptive study, specifically a case report by a resident nurse in cardiovascular health, conducted in July 2024, at the General Cardiology Unit of a Public Cardiology Hospital in São Paulo State. Strategies included: "Dog-Assisted Therapy," "Comfort Coffee," "Multidisciplinary Palliative Care Visits," and the "Ágape Project." Results: The coping strategies yielded effective results, positively impacting patient behavior, well-being, welcoming, and social interactions. Expressions of relief and gratitude demonstrated the interventions' efficacy in creating a comforting environment, highlighting their fundamental role in patients' health-disease process coping during hospitalization. The implemented actions proved to be effective and well-planned strategies for improving care and health outcomes for patients with long hospitalization periods. Conclusion: This experience report emphasized the relevance of strategies implemented in the General Cardiology Unit, based on the resident nurse's experience. The adoption of "Dog-Assisted Therapy," "Comfort Coffee," "Multidisciplinary Palliative Care Visits," and the "Ágape Project" proved effective in promoting emotional and social benefits for both patients and their companions.
