This study aimed to identify the main obstacles faced by editors of scientific journals from the Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros (UNIMONTES) Journal Portal, with a special focus on the Revista Eletrônica Nacional de Educação Física (RENEF). The research was descriptive, cross-sectional, with a mixed-methods approach, conducted with editors of 15 out of the 17 journals of the portal. Data collection was carried out through a semi-structured questionnaire administered via Google Forms, and the results were analyzed using SPSS (version 20.0). The main challenges identified were peer review (46.7%), funding and costs (33.3%), and meeting editorial deadlines (20%). Additional difficulties included issues of visibility, financial sustainability, adoption of technological innovations, relationships with authors and collaborators, and limitations in implementing ethical and institutional policies. It was concluded that insufficient financial and technological resources, along with lack of institutional support, are the major barriers to the development and sustainability of the journals. Strengthening structural and financial investments, as well as improving editorial practices and internationalization, are essential strategies to ensure the continuity and quality of scientific communication within UNIMONTES.
