Abstract

Objective: to identify in the literature the complications of type I diabetes mellitus in Brazilian children and adolescents and the associated factors. Method: integrative literature review structured in six steps guided by the Check List Preferred Reporting Itens for Systematic Review Sand Meta-Analyses from the research question: what are the complications of type I Diabetes Mellitus in Brazilian children and adolescents and the associated factors? The searches took place from June to August 2021 in the databases MEDLINE, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, Database in Nursing and the Bibliographic Index Español em Ciencias de la Salud. Results: the final sample comprised six articles which revealed that diabetic ketoacidosis, dyslipidemias, celiac disease, hearing impairment, auditory neuropathy, cardiovascular risks, pulmonary problems, risk of mortality from circulatory diseases in the elderly, arterial hypertension, metabolic syndromes and dyslipidemias are the complications of diabetes in children and adolescents. Associated factors are related to genetic predisposition, hypothyroidism, asthma, atherosclerosis, inadequate nutritional status, obesity, age younger than five years, low socioeconomic status, difficulty in self-care, self-administration of insulin, and longer diagnosis time. Conclusion: the complications of type I diabetes in children and adolescents and related factors stem from behavioral, environmental, endocrine and genetic factors. These data reveal the need to establish programmed activities in health surveillance to strengthen treatment and follow-up links in order to promptly identify risk situations and prevent other health problems.
