Abstract

The objective of the present study was to report a case of hypovolemic shock due to rupture of the left atrium in the auricle region in a nine-month-old feline, referred for diagnosis to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of the University of Cruz Alta (LPV/UNICRUZ). The animal had a history of sudden death, and the owner reported restlessness and agitation minutes before death. On external inspection of the animal, bloody secretion was observed in the nostrils and pale oral and ocular mucous membranes. Upon opening the thoracic cavity, a large amount of bloody fluid and blood clots were observed, in addition to pulmonary edema and hemopericardium. In the pericardial sac there was also a perforation where bloody fluid flowed. The left atrium had a thin wall and two ruptures in the auricle region. Fragments of organs from the thoracic, abdominal and brain cavities were collected and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. Subsequently, the tissue samples were cleaved, processed and stained by the hematoxylin and eosin technique. The diagnosis of hypovolemic shock due to left atrial rupture was based on the history and macroscopic findings. Thus, the importance of this work in reporting a case considered uncommon in veterinary medicine is highlighted, in order to contribute with important data for the study of the etiology and epidemiology of spontaneous cardiac rupture in felines.
